Description
Introduction
The naming ceremony had been fully packed since before Asr prayer. The house was overflowing with women of all sorts, spilling out onto the streets. The guests were comfortably seated on arranged chairs, and the compound gate was wide open. Everywhere you looked, you could see Amirah’s fashionable friends dressed to the nines, alongside the senior women and Addah’s invited guests from afar. The DJ was pumping upbeat tracks while some guests danced and others ate, as food was already being served in abundance.
The Feast and Festivities
There was rice of every kind, fried spaghetti, dambu, moin-moin, assorted beef and chicken, chilled fura served in cups, zobo, tiger nut drink (kunun aya), and bottled soft drinks—a true feast, Masha Allah. They even went as far as buying bread straight from Kano to make a delicious bandashe (a popular northern delicacy), which everyone was rushing to get.
Around 3:00 PM, while Ma’u and her friends were busy chatting, Jafar knocked on the parlor door. After receiving permission, he peeked in from the doorway and said, "Mami, someone is knocking. When I asked who it was, they said it’s Anty Aisha from next door—Anty Amirah’s neighbor. I told them I’d come inform you before opening the door."
"Alright, go ahead, I’m coming," Ma’u replied. Jafar turned and left. Although she felt reluctant, she stood up out of respect for Anty Aisha. However, she was determined not to let anyone enter her private room today. They were used to people invading her space during events, leaving it messy and expecting her to clean up afterward—that practice had stopped for good.
The Encounter with Anty Aisha
As Ma’u stepped downstairs, Anty Aisha was already waiting by the door. Ma’u opened the door just a crack and stood her ground. Seeing Anty Aisha try to push her way in, Ma’u blocked the entrance, causing Anty's expression to drop. They exchanged polite greetings. Anty Aisha asked how the gathering was going, and Ma’u replied that all was well. A brief silence followed before Anty Aisha mustered the courage to say:
"I actually came to ask if you could provide some food to be served to our guests."
"Ah, please don't worry, I honestly cooked enough because I have my own guests," Asma’u cut her off, attempting to close the door. But before she could finish, the older woman interrupted again:
"Actually... please, if you don't mind, could we bring some of our guests to sit in here? The place outside is completely packed, wallahi!"
"Well, that’s just how ceremonies are; one has to be patient. Not everyone gets things exactly how they want them. They just have to bear it and sit outside since it's only for a short while." With a firm bang, Ma’u shut the door right in Anty Aisha’s astonished face.
Upstairs Backlash
When she returned upstairs, her friends immediately asked what happened. "She wanted to bring extra guests into my space!" Ma’u said. "What did you say?" they chorused. Ma’u let out a light laugh before answering: "What else could I say except no way? I’ve cut off unnecessary ties. Do they expect to stab me in the back while acting friendly? Absolutely not! Everyone should stick to their own lane because there won't be a repeat performance," Asma’u declared.
"May Allah protect us. Your husband’s relatives are truly shameless, wallahi," Zahra remarked. "Waa! Nobody is going to play those games with me. Wallahi, I commend Aliyu's mother for not going completely crazy on them for such nerve. These people simply don't know how to respect boundaries," Rahma added. Ma’u remained silent throughout; they wouldn't understand unless they walked in her shoes. They continued chatting until the call to Asr prayer, at which point they stood up to pray.
The New Mother’s Grand Entrance
For the naming ceremony itself, right at 4:00 PM, the exit of the new mother, Hajia Amirah, was announced. She looked breathtaking, dressed in an ultra-luxurious dark blue lace outfit embroidered with light blue thread that contrasted wonderfully with her fair complexion. She looked effortlessly stunning in a perfectly fitted, flawless gown.
A gorgeous goggoro headgear sat regally on her head, accentuating her beautiful face. Her hands and feet were adorned with rich red and black henna, paired with a massive gold necklace, multiple rings, and heavy bangles—only God knows where they sourced them all. She cradled her baby, who was dressed in one of Ma’u’s white baby gowns wrapped in a matching white shawl. Surrounded by her cheering friends, she stepped into the compound as the DJ blasted hype music.
Behind the Facade
After walking her to her seat and taking pictures, everyone found a place to sit. DJ Fele, specially brought in all the way from Kano, invited someone to open the event with a welcoming speech. Hajiya Hassana, one of Addah’s close friends, took the mic:
"First of all, we welcome everyone to this naming ceremony of our favored child, born into a loving family. We pray that as the event started in peace, it ends in peace, and everyone returns safely to their homes. You are all welcome!" The crowd erupted in applause.
Nearby, Addah’s face practically split in two from smiling so wide. Dressed in a gorgeous, high-end Ankara outfit with a perfectly tied headgear, she beamed with joy, welcoming her guests warmly, thrilled that so many had honored her invitation despite the short notice.
As the celebration heated up, Amirah couldn't hold onto her baby for long; relatives and friends kept taking turns holding the infant for photos. But holding the baby wasn't what bothered her most—a biting chill had settled in, especially with the afternoon breeze howling through the courtyard trees and the front gate wide open due to the massive crowd.
Outwardly, she smiled, but inwardly, she kept praying for the event to end smoothly without incident, feeling that she had made a foolish mistake agreeing to this large gathering. Still, she forced herself to smile, dancing with her friends for TikTok videos and live streams, while half her mind remained fixed on where her baby was.
Chaos in the Backrooms
Meanwhile, inside the house, Amirah remembered that the souvenir items meant for thanking guests were stored inside a bag in Bashir’s room. Fearing they might be forgotten until everyone dispersed, she handed the keys to Anty Aisha, instructing her to bring out the items when departure time approached.
True to form, as Magrib approached, Anty Aisha unlocked the room to retrieve the items for the guests sitting inside the parlor. Seeing the souvenirs, greedy relatives swarmed the room like locusts, thinking it was a free-for-all scramble. Despite Ummi’s attempts to stop them, they surged into Bashir’s room. Before long, someone violently shoved a wardrobe door, causing the mirror to shatter instantly with a loud crash (*crack!*), sending women into frantic gasps and shouts.
Before they could recover from that shock, two young boys rushed in, spotted some toys on the vanity mirror, and began hurling Bashir’s expensive designer perfumes onto the floor, smashing them to pieces. Although most people quietly slipped away knowing they had crossed a line, a few greedy individuals still snatched bottles of perfume on their way out.
Ummi and Anty Aisha stood frozen in shock. "Anty, what are we going to do now?" Ummi asked frantically, knowing only God could save her from Bashir’s wrath if he found out she was involved. "I'm thinking the same thing, Ummi. Let's just grab a broom and clean up. What's done is done; we'll deal with the consequences later." Agreeing, they swept up the broken glass and bottles, packed the remaining souvenirs into the parlor, hid Amirah’s room key safely where no one would notice, and quickly gathered Anty Aisha's children to leave for home, dreading the aftermath.
The Theft and Lockdown
Out in the dancing arena, Addah’s senior friends had taken over the floor. Magrib time had come, but the drumming and dancing continued. Smiling proudly, Addah unzipped her bag to fetch the brand-new cash she had specifically exchanged for spraying dancers—only to find the bag completely empty.
Panicked, she frantically searched the bag again. Her spraying cash, her phone, Amirah’s phone which she had kept, and a massive pile of monetary gifts—enough to clear all their debts with plenty of change left over—were completely gone.
Uttering a harsh curse, she stared wildly at the ground. This was true, unannounced calamity. Spotting Amirah heading inside with two people, she tried to call out, but the loud music drowned her voice. Desperate, she ran straight to the front gate, slammed it shut, and locked it tight.
Leaving the key in the padlock, she rushed back to the DJ, grabbed his phone to cut the music, and silenced the party in one swift motion.
The Confrontation
Furious, the DJ turned around, only to see the mother of the day standing with her hands on her hips, breathing fire. "Return the mic to me, but keep the music off," Addah demanded. Seeing the intensity in her eyes, the DJ silently handed over the microphone and waited to see what would unfold.
Facing the bewildered crowd of women who had been dancing just moments ago, Addah panted heavily before speaking: "I won’t make a long speech. If whoever stole my money—nearly two hundred thousand naira, my seventy-thousand-naira phone, the three cameras belonging to the makeup artist—doesn't bring them out right now, or drop them back into that bag over there, I swear on everything I hold dear, we are going straight to the police station! I did not host a joyful celebration to be robbed and humiliated!"
Chaos erupted instantly. Women began frantically checking their own bags, and shrieks filled the air as everyone realized their purses had been rifled through while they were distracted.
Hajiya Mariya, one of Addah’s close friends, dumped her handbag on the ground. Everything was there—cash, phone, heavy gold ring—except for the key to the brand-new car she had driven there. She placed both hands on her head and broke down in bitter tears.
"I am ruined today, Mariya! What will I tell Alhaji? He doesn't even know I took his brand-new car out for the very first time before he traveled to Lagos! Now it's gone!" She wailed uncontrollably. Other women joined in, crying over stolen phones and cash. Car theft in broad daylight—and a husband's car at that—was a catastrophe beyond comprehension.
The Shocking Discovery
While the compound dissolved into a madhouse, Addah stood firm, refusing to unlock the gate until her property was recovered. Ignoring her friends' pleas to open up, she remained unyielding.
Suddenly, Inna Gaji ran breathlessly from Amirah’s parlor straight to Addah. "Thank goodness you're here, Gaji! You won't believe this—someone emptied my bag of money and phones, so I locked the gate. Nobody is leaving until my property is found!" "Forget about money right now, Fatu! There is a far worse disaster waiting for you inside. Come with me!" Gaji pulled Addah by the hand, dragging her toward the room like an unwilling camel.
The Tragedy in Lagos
Meanwhile, in Lagos, Bashir had spent the evening at his friend Musa’s place to escape his lonely house. While Musa browsed TikTok, Bashir sat nearby, dismissive of social media. "People and their endless showmanship. Now they even stream naming ceremonies live," Musa remarked, showing Bashir a live video stream. Bashir glanced at it dismissively. "May Allah save us." "Masha Allah, though the new mother is gorgeous. My friend, I need to visit Gombe and marry a fair beauty like this," Musa joked.
Idle curiosity made Bashir glance back at the phone screen. His eyes locked onto the live feed: it was his wife, Amirah, dancing energetically. He snatched the phone from Musa’s hand just as the live stream ended. "Musa, open up this girl's page for me," Bashir ordered coldly. Musa laughed, assuming it was harmless, and opened Nabila Dikko’s page.
Bashir watched the introductory video—Amirah in full makeup, holding baby Iman. Handing the phone back to Musa without a word, Bashir pulled out his own phone, his face a mask of suppressed fury.
He dialed Naziru’s number. It rang twice before Naziru answered. "Naziru, what is going on at the house?" Bashir demanded. Sensing trouble, Naziru stammered, "Wallahi, Yaya, they are holding a naming ceremony. The house is packed with women, and they even brought a live band from Kano..." "Listen to me: go to the house, lock the outside gate, leave immediately, and wait for my call," Bashir cut him off coldly. "Yes, Yaya!" Naziru replied happily, thrilled at the prospect of locking everyone in.
Without informing his mother or answering Ummi's calls, Bashir hopped on his motorcycle, purchased a heavy-duty padlock fit for a prison, and sped toward his house.
The Lockdown Trap
Back at the Gombe residence, Ma’u and her friends finished packing and prepared to leave for Isha prayer. Unaware of the drama downstairs, they headed to the front gate. As Zahra stepped outside, Naziru suddenly rushed up, slamming the gate shut and locking it right in front of them.
Ma’u managed to slip back inside, while Zahra was left outside. The trapped women rushed the gate, banging frantically, but it was too late. "Please, Hajia, open up for us! Why are we locked in like criminals?" a woman pleaded. Ma’u immediately called Naziru. "Naziru, what is the meaning of this? Why are we locked inside our own house?" Laughing, Naziru replied, "Yaya called me and told me to buy a padlock, lock everyone inside, and leave!"
The Medical Emergency
Inside Amirah’s room, the situation turned from chaotic to terrifying. The baby, Iman, was gasping for air, her eyes rolling back, chest heaving rapidly as she emitted weak, strangled wheezes. Amirah sat paralyzed, her headgear displaced, weeping uncontrollably.
Habiba, Addah’s co-wife, mustered the courage to shout, "Somebody take the baby to the hospital!" Ummi frantically tried calling Naziru, but his line was busy on call-waiting.
The Final Reckoning
Back in Lagos, having blocked out all calls, Bashir rode home with cold vengeance burning in his heart. He had warned Amirah, and she had defied him. He vowed to teach her a lesson she would never forget—unaware that a far greater tragedy was unfolding at home.
As the women inside pounded hopelessly on the locked gates of the compound, trapped in a nightmare of their own making, the full weight of the day's foolishness came crashing down.
