Description

A DANDI BOOK COMPELET BY OUM HAIRAN

I spotted a medium-aged, petite young girl lying on the bed, making a phone call and bursting into continuous laughter; it was obvious the call was making her happy.
Mummy approached the bedroom and began knocking, but she heard no response. She fell silent as she heard the laughter echoing inside the room. Pressing her ear against the door, she realized the girl was on a phone call, catching some words while missing others.
Seeing that the call was not ending, Mummy knocked again, but the girl was too absorbed to notice. Intrigued, Mummy turned the doorknob and luckily found it unlocked.
She entered with a greeting before saying, "Muhibbah, is everything alright with you? Who have you been talking to for so long? I've been knocking, but it was silent as if no one was in the room."
She startled and sat up upon seeing Mummy standing over her. Trying to hide her embarrassment, she said, "Mummy, were you looking for me?" Mummy gave her a look before asking, "Muhibbah, who are you talking to?" She stood up, her heart pounding, but forced a smile at Mummy and said, "It’s a female friend of mine. We haven't met in a long time and I lost her contact, so she called me today," all while hiding the phone behind her back.
Mummy looked at her, wondering about the lie she told and what she was trying to hide, because the conversation clearly indicated she was talking to a male. Muhibbah interrupted her thoughts by saying, "Mummy, I am the one making dinner for us today! I learned a new Jellof rice recipe on my phone, and I assure you that when you eat it, you will be amazed."
"And if Daddy eats it, he will give me a gift!" Without waiting for Mummy's response, she rushed out of the bedroom. Mummy smiled, saying, "May Allah guide this girl."
Mummy followed her to the parlor and found her sitting down watching MBC 3. Sitting beside her, she remarked, "You, Muhibbah, you are still no different from a child—your only job is watching cartoons."
She smiled and said, "Mummy, am I really grown up? I am only 17 years old, so you see I still have time. It's because you don't have a younger daughter that you say this, but just wait, I will give birth to a baby soon."
Mummy feigned a playful frown and said, "Oh come on, Muhibbah, what kind of baby? Stop saying that before it becomes real. Otherwise, you'll have to take it to an orphanage!" Mummy laughed, saying, "Rather, I will take you to the orphanage because you are the troublemaker." They both burst into laughter.
They continued chatting happily. Muhibbah glanced at the clock hanging on the parlor wall; it was 1:30 PM. She quickly stood up and said, "Mummy, it's almost school time, let me go get ready." Without waiting for an answer, she entered her bedroom.
She went straight into the restroom, took a shower, and performed ablution. When she came out, she laid out the prayer mat and performed the Zuhr prayer. She then went to her wardrobe, picked out her uniform, and got dressed in less than 5 minutes. The uniform consisted of blue-black trousers, a white shirt, a blue-black hijab, and she tied a niqab (face veil). She picked up her school bag and came out. Not finding Mummy in the parlor, she headed to her bedroom, knocked, and was granted permission to enter.
She found her sitting on the prayer mat reading the Holy Quran. "Mummy, I am leaving, I am almost late." She turned to leave but stopped and added, "Oh, my Mummy, don't forget I said I will make dinner today!" Before Mummy could speak, she had already dashed out. Mummy smiled and resumed her recitation.
Outside, she got into the car, and the driver took off. He parked in front of a massive school. She opened the door, stepped out, and just as she was about to enter, she turned back to the driver and said, "Please come back early because I want to return home early today; I have work to do." "Alright, madam, by God's grace it will be done."
Leaving him there, she entered the school compound while he drove back home. Upon entering the class, she began chatting with Rufaeda and others until they heard Mallam Sudaes clearing his throat, forcing everyone to quickly return to their seats.
They spent one and a half hours in class, with three teachers entering for 30 minutes each, teaching Hadith, Nahwu (Arabic grammar), and Arabic language.
They performed the Asr prayer before returning to class for two subjects: Mutala'a (Reading) and Adab (Literature). At exactly 5:00 PM, they were dismissed. As she walked out, the driver was already waiting. Without wasting any time, she got into the car and headed home. Even before the car finished parking, she jumped out and hurried into the parlor with a greeting. Finding no one there, she went straight to her bedroom to change.
Returning to the parlor, it was still empty, so she headed to the kitchen to start cooking. She began parboiling the rice and blending the ingredients for the sauce. Suddenly sensing someone behind her, she turned quickly and smiled upon seeing it was Mummy. Mummy smiled back, asking, "Muhibbah, when did you get back?" "I've been back for a bit, Mummy. I greeted upon entering but the house was silent. I am rushing to cook so that when Daddy returns, it won't be unfinished."
"You've done well, Daddy's favorite (Shalelen Daddy)." She smiled broadly, revealing her teeth, because in her life, she loved being called Daddy's favorite. "Alright, what should I help you with?" "No, Mummy, go and rest, I will handle everything today." By 7:00 PM, she completed everything, arranged it on the dining table, and went to her room for the Maghrib prayer.
She took a shower to refresh herself, performed the Maghrib prayer, and remained on the mat until the Isha prayer. Afterward, she opened her wardrobe and picked out an outfit. At the mirror, she applied body lotion and dressed within minutes in a vest and a knee-length skirt. She tied her hair, but its long tail still hung down her back. The outfit suited her perfectly, and she smelled beautifully fragrant, like someone preparing to welcome a groom.
She found the family at the dining table waiting for her. Approaching them with a bright face, she said, "Daddy, welcome back." "Welcome, my Shalelen Daddy," he replied with a smile. She opened the food flasks and began serving them the Jellof rice, mutton, and the Zobo drink she prepared. They had just started eating when she asked, "Mummy, where is Brother Anas? Hasn't he returned yet?" Before she finished her sentence, he walked in with a greeting. They responded as he pulled up a chair. The aroma of the food hit him, and he remarked, "Wow, this food looks delicious today!" She served him, and on his very first spoonful, he said, "Wow, this food tastes really good today!" Muhibbah burst into laughter, saying, "So I actually know how to cook this well, look at how you are praising it!"
"God forbid I praise your food, since when did you learn to cook like this? Just make sure I don't have to eat your cooking again!" He assumed a stern older-brother expression. She complained, "Am I playing with you? Even Daddy agreed it's good." Daddy chimed in, saying, "What happened again? Can't you two be in the same space without arguing?"
Pouting, she said, "Just because I said he is praising my cooking, he claims I did wrong. But she spoke the truth because the food is very delicious, my Shalelen Daddy," Daddy noted. "Was it really her that cooked?" Anas asked. Mummy replied, "Yes." "No wonder the food tastes strange, it doesn't even have enough seasoning," Anas teased. She frowned and said, "Mummy, do you hear what Brother Anas is saying? He claims the food isn't delicious!" "No, he is just teasing you, he knows it's delicious," Mummy comforted. They continued teasing each other while Daddy joined in, laughing.
Her phone began to ring, and Mummy saw the name "Brother Fu'ad" flashing on the screen. She wondered why Fu'ad was calling Muhibbah at this time of the night, especially since they didn't usually get along well. She handed the phone to Muhibbah, who widened her eyes upon seeing the name. Making eye contact with Mummy, she forced a smile, said goodnight to everyone, and headed to her bedroom.
Lying down, she wondered if Mummy had noticed something going on between her and Brother Fu'ad. While deep in thought, her phone rang again. Putting it to her ear, she said, "May the peace of Allah be upon my brother." He replied, "Ameen, to my beautiful younger sister." She covered her face as if he could see her and said, "You can never stop teasing."
"Where did you go earlier? I called but Mummy picked up." Her heart skipped a beat, and she asked, "When was that?" "Around 7:00 PM." With a nervous, forced smile, she said, "I forgot it in the kitchen while I was in the bedroom praying." He smiled, "My beautiful sister, what did you pray for us?" She let out a sigh before saying, "A lot of things." They spent nearly an hour on the phone before saying their goodbyes. She went to the restroom, brushed her teeth, performed ablution, said her bedtime prayers, turned off the bedroom light, and went to sleep.

She opened her eyes and looked at the clock beside her bed, reciting the morning waking prayer. It was 7:00 AM, so she quickly rushed into the restroom to shower, coming out shortly after. She dressed in her school uniform—a knee-length dress, long socks covering up to her knees, and a shoulder-length hijab.
She found the family at the dining table having breakfast. Approaching with a pleasant face, she said, "Good morning my family," as she sat next to Anas. They responded warmly. Looking at Anas, she asked, "Brother Anas, are you driving me to school today?" He gave her a sharp glare, asking rhetorically, "Am I your driver?"
Pouting, she pleaded, "Please, Brother Anas, help me drop me off at school before you head to work." He gave her a playful rap on the head and said, "I won't drop you off. If you won't let the driver take you, then don't go to school at all."
She let out a dramatic, spoiled cry, saying, "Daddy, do you see what Brother Anas is doing?" "Leave him alone, my Shalelen Daddy. Hurry up and finish your breakfast, I will drop you off myself."
She let out a vocal smile, "Thank you, my Daddy, my pride!" she said, glancing mockingly at Anas. "You two just can't stay in the same shade without bickering," Mummy remarked.
"This girl looks down on me. Always looking for trouble, as if I am the one who usually takes her to school," he muttered with a stern face.
They finished breakfast under these dynamics, and she followed Daddy out.
He parked in front of a massive school labeled KA'AB BN MALIK ACADEMY. One look at the school revealed it was meant for the wealthy. He handed her one thousand Naira. Thanking him, she proceeded inside.
They spent two hours in class, with two teachers spending 40 minutes each. At 10:00 AM, the break bell rang. Muhibbah had been eagerly waiting for this moment to share some news with Sumayya.
Holding her hand, she said, "My friend, come let's talk!" Without waiting for an answer, she dragged her along. Sumayya followed, saying, "It seems you have a big story today!" She simply smiled without saying anything.
They headed to the cafeteria, bought meat pies and drinks, and went to the student lounge area. The space was beautifully set up with nice chairs and circular tables. They found a spot and sat down.
Muhibbah let out a sigh, smiled, and said, "I'm in love!" Sumayya gave her a look of utter confusion, saying, "You mean you've fallen in love?" She nodded in confirmation. "Who is the lucky guy who stole your heart?" "It's Brother Fu'ad," she said briefly.
Sumayya drew closer to her and said, "I don't understand what you're saying. Which Brother Fu'ad?"
"The same Brother Fu'ad you know." "As far as I know, you two don't get along, like a prophet and an infidel! And besides, what about Mukhtar? What will you do with him? You know no one at home even knows you are dating, let alone finding out you are dating two guys at the same time!" she said, completely shocked by the revelation.
Closing her eyes as if feeling sleepy, she replied, "I mean a one-day love." Sumayya gave her a playful swat, saying, "Explain it clearly so I can understand, I don't get what you mean at all!"
Adjusting her posture, she said, "I mean Brother Fu'ad and I fell in love, but just for one day." She explained how it happened to her friend, adding, "You know I won't turn my back on Mukhtar; we are still together. I can't realistically date Brother Fu'ad anyway—you know how proud, arrogant, and self-important he acts, like a prince!" They both laughed and returned to class.

It wasn't until 2:00 PM that they were dismissed. Exhausted, she returned home and found Mummy in the parlor. She sat on a chair, catching her breath, and said, "Good afternoon, Mummy." "Welcome, my Shalelen Daddy."
"Honestly, I am so tired," she said, heading to her room. She changed her clothes and went to the dining area to eat while chatting with Mummy.
After presenting her Isha prayer and eating dinner at 9:00 PM, she logged into a WhatsApp group with her schoolmates. She introduced a topic: "Between men and women, who cheats/deceives more?" This immediately stirred up the group, with the girls blaming men and the boys blaming women. By 10:00 PM, they finished their chat. She went to the restroom, performed ablution, said her sleeping prayers, turned off the light, and went to bed.
She didn't wake up early since it was Saturday and there was no school. The clock beside her bed read 9:00 AM. She went to the restroom, showered, brushed her teeth, and came out. At the mirror, she applied body lotion, skipped heavy makeup, used only face powder, and put lipstick on her lips. She went to the wardrobe, picked out a long Ankara dress, and wrapped a shawl. The clothes fit her beautifully, making her look stunning as she walked out to the parlor.
The house was completely quiet, indicating that everyone was still asleep. She entered the kitchen to prepare breakfast since her stomach was already growling. She began peeling yams. Hearing footsteps, she turned around to see Mummy entering the kitchen to start breakfast, only to find Muhibbah already there. Mummy smiled. "Good morning, Mummy."
"Good morning, did you wake up early?" "Yes, I didn't hear anyone moving, so I decided to prepare something for us to eat." "You did well, my Shalelen Daddy," Mummy said.
They cooked together and finished within an hour, setting the dining table with fried yam, eggs, and pepper chicken.
They began eating breakfast. Since Anas hadn't come out yet, Daddy said, "My girl, go and wake Anas up." "No, Alhaji," Mummy intervened. "Leave him alone, his hunger will wake him up. You know if Muhibbah goes to his room now, an argument will start. Those two never get along." Before she even finished speaking, he walked in with a greeting. He greeted them respectfully, sat down, and began eating breakfast. As for Muhibbah, once she finished eating, she returned to the parlor, turned on the TV, and started watching cartoons.
"Daddy, Suhael told me he is returning to Nigeria tomorrow," Anas announced. "Are you serious?" Muhibbah asked in surprise. He gave her a glare, saying, "You think I'm lying to you? Keep watching your cartoons while your mind wanders." She pouted, "It was just a question." "There you go again, that's enough. When did you speak with him?" "Yesterday night." "Bring the laptop so we can do a video call with him," Daddy ordered.
In less than two minutes, he returned with the laptop, placed it on the center table in the parlor, and initiated the video call. It rang once and he picked up, as if waiting for their call.
"Good morning, big bro!"
"Good morning, lovely sister!"
"How is school?" "School is fine, Alhamdulillah. We finished our final exams and I will return to Nigeria tomorrow, Insha Allah." She jumped up, saying, "Wow, I'm so happy, I can't wait for tomorrow!" Anas moved the laptop away, saying, "Are you the only one who wants to talk? Let Daddy and the rest speak too." She frowned as if about to cry and said, "Please, Brother Anas, leave it, we were almost done talking." Daddy spoke to him before he settled down. "What do you want me to bring for you?" Suhael asked her. "I want a phone and a laptop," she said briefly. They spoke for about 30 minutes before she handed it over to Daddy. Mummy didn't say much after the initial greetings, maintaining a respectful distance as he was her firstborn. He said his goodbyes and hung up.
Muhibbah and Mummy returned to the parlor chatting, though half her attention was on the cartoons. Daddy and Anas left for a friend's wedding ceremony.
They sat in the parlor chatting affectionately. "Abba, I want to go to Kaduna tomorrow. Is everything alright in Kaduna?" "Everything is fine. Suhael is returning to Nigeria tomorrow, so I want to go greet him," Fu'ad said. "Honestly, we should make this trip together because I haven't been to Kaduna in a while, and there's something I've been meaning to do there but haven't had the chance. Insha Allah, we will go together tomorrow." "Alright, Abba, may Allah bring us to tomorrow safely." "Ameen," Abba replied.
"Abba, I want to go too," Aisha said. Fu'ad gave her a sharp glare, making her swallow her words and look down. "No, Aisha, wait until school holidays, then you and your mother can go." She reluctantly agreed, knowing that even if school was out, Brother Fu'ad wouldn't let her go since he was traveling too. Ummi, sitting aside, said, "Let the holidays come, we will go too." She smiled, "Alright then, Ummi, may Allah bring us to that time." They all responded with "Ameen" and continued their chat. As for Fu'ad, once the travel discussion with Abba ended, he focused entirely on his phone and said nothing more, knowing his reserved/antisocial nature, no one bothered him further.
They spent nearly an hour chatting. Mummy looked at Muhibbah and asked, "What is going on between you and Fu'ad?" She asked it as a direct question. As if in a dream, Muhibbah turned quickly, shocked by the question, and said, "There is nothing between us except family ties, Mummy." She didn't push the matter further and said, "Alright then, since you say there is nothing." Muhibbah felt her heart drop. With a heavy spirit, she headed to her bedroom. Lying down, she questioned why Mummy asked that. Did she notice something? She kept questioning herself without answers, losing sleep. She felt in her bones that Mummy and Daddy had discussed her and Brother Fu'ad, misunderstanding their relationship based on the phone call Mummy overheard the other day.
She let out a heavy sigh, praying in her heart that her parents would realize nothing existed between them beyond family relations.
She lay there until the Zuhr prayer call, went to the restroom, performed ablution, laid out her prayer mat, and prayed. After her prayers, she went out to the parlor and found Mummy sitting there. "Welcome." "Where are you going with that bag?" "I want to go to Sumayya's house. I'm not feeling well today, so I can't go to Islamic school." "Alright, go back inside and lie down, you are not going anywhere," Mummy said, staring at her.
Left with no choice, she returned to her bedroom. She pulled out her phone and called Sumayya. It rang twice before she picked up. "Hello, my friend, how is the weekend?" She sighed, "Fine. Please, if it's no trouble, I want you to come over to our house." "Is everything okay?" "Yes, everything is fine, there's just something I want us to discuss. I'm out right now, but I will drop by tomorrow, Insha Allah." She sighed, "Alright, goodbye." They hung up.

Slowly, he descended from the airplane, closing his eyes and letting out a deep sigh as he took in the air of his home country for the first time in years.
Walking calmly while pulling his suitcase, he was caught off guard when someone threw themselves onto him. "Welcome back, big bro!" He let out a sigh, "Come on, Muhibbah, this kind of hug will knock me down!" he said, gently detaching her from his body. Smiling, she took the suitcase, and they walked over to where Daddy and the others were standing.
He opened the car trunk, put the suitcase inside, they all got into the car, and Anas drove them home.
Ever since they left, Mummy had been in the kitchen cooking. She suddenly heard Muhibbah loudly calling out for her. Realizing she wasn't in the parlor, Muhibbah excitedly rushed into the kitchen.
Mummy turned around and looked at her. "Calling like a blind person!" Pouting in her usual spoiled manner, she said, "Sorry, I just came to tell you we are back!"
Mummy said nothing and continued her work. They finished cooking together and neatly arranged the dining table.
He went straight to his bedroom to shower and get fully dressed before coming out to the parlor. At the dining area, he found the family waiting, seemingly just for him.
Bowing respectfully, he began greeting his parents, who responded with joy and affection before he pulled up a chair...

2. Narrative Summary

The story revolves around Muhibbah, a sheltered, slightly dramatic, and deeply loved 17-year-old schoolgirl (referred to frequently as *"Shalelen Daddy"*—Daddy’s favorite).

  • The Suspicion: The plot initiates when her mother (Mummy) catches her laughing secretly during a phone call with a male. Though Muhibbah lies and claims it is a female friend, the caller is actually Brother Fu'ad, a distant, proud relative with whom she normally has a tense relationship. Mummy secretly grows suspicious of their dynamic, fearing an inappropriate relationship.
  • Daily Dynamics: The narrative details Muhibbah's daily routine, highlighting her close but argumentative relationship with her older brother, Anas, her schooling, and her love for cooking for her family.
  • The Secret Revelation: During a school break, Muhibbah confesses to her best friend, Sumayya, that she has engaged in a "Soyayyar Kwana Daya" (One-Day Love/Flirtation) with the strict and arrogant Brother Fu'ad, while still maintaining her actual relationship with her boyfriend, Mukhtar.
  • Family Tension & Arrival: Mummy confronts Muhibbah about Fu'ad, causing internal anxiety for the teenager, who fears her parents are misinterpreting a brief family flirtation. Meanwhile, Fu'ad and his father prepare to travel from their station to Kaduna to welcome another elder brother, Suhael, who is returning to Nigeria after years abroad following his final exams. The segment ends with the joyful family reunion as Suhael arrives home.

    4. Literary & Contextual Analytics

  • Genre & Theme: The text belongs to contemporary Hausa Digital Fiction (often categorized under Littattafan Yaki/Soyayya or web-serialized novels). The core themes explore adolescent shifting identities, the contrast between external conservative modesty (wearing a niqab/hijab) and private modern realities (smartphone usage, dating culture), and high-class northern Nigerian family structures.
  • The "One-Day Love" Motif: The title and plot device "Soyayyar Kwana Daya" represents a modern youth subculture element where teenagers engage in brief, non-committal romantic testing or emotional experiments with individuals they otherwise clash with in real life.
  • Socio-Economic Coding: The author deliberately drops socio-economic markers to establish the family's upper-class status. These include: private drivers, attending a high-end academy (Ka'ab Bn Malik Academy), owning laptops for international video calls, changing into expensive home clothing, having family members flying in internationally, and dropping large cash gifts (e.g., 1,000 Naira casually given for school pocket money).
  • Linguistic Style: The text uses standard informal Hausa heavily mixed with loanwords and social media terminology (bed, calling, knocking, video call, system, meat pie, drinks, vest, skirt, body lotion, group, topic). The writing format includes direct breaks to address the target audience, dedicated pages, and blessings for the author's real-life family members, which is standard in localized self-publishing platforms like ArewaBooks or WhatsApp broadcast groups.
