Ango held Amarya in their part of the house and they walked to the bedroom. Islaha asked, "Where is my room?" He replied, "Today is your turn, my dear, time to start the romance." Islaha felt scared and asked, "Even with the journey's fatigue?" Sahil said, "What's wrong with lying down together and waking up?" Islaha laughed, expecting them to do something major, only to hear about just lying down. He said, "I just want to see your body today; I'm not going to do anything to you, just looking, looking isn't eating." She smiled and entered the toilet.
As soon as she entered, Sahil received a call from Daddy. Daddy called Sahil more often because he felt he was more sensible. Sahil picked up and said, "Calling at night like someone has died?" Daddy said, "Your mother has arrived in Nigeria; she is currently at the airport in Abuja. Go and pick her up at your house. She kept telling me she was coming, but I completely forgot." Sahil said, "Mother? She's going to freeze at the airport! Where am I going to pick her up from? I don't even know her!" Daddy said, "I am not joking; a mother is a mother, you know God will hold you accountable if you neglect her. Go to the airport, you will see her; she is a white woman, a tall, bony one with a long neck." Sahil asked, "A bony one with a long neck?" Daddy said, "Yes." Sahil said, "Okay, we will go," and ended the call.
When Islaha came out of the bathroom, he told her what Daddy said about a "bony woman with a long neck." She said, "You guys should go," while hiding her laughter. He called Sohail and told him the story. Sohail said, "A bony woman with a long neck? Let's go and see for ourselves." He also informed Maheera.
They got into Sahil's car and left, repeating "bony woman with a long neck" all the way. When they arrived, they looked around, and Sohail asked, "Where is this bony woman with a long neck?" Then he spotted a white elderly woman who was quite tall with a very thin neck. Sohail looked at Sahil, and they almost laughed. They walked up to her, and Sahil started laughing, saying, "Thank God we don't look like you."
The white woman looked at them and recognized them. She beamed with smiles, looking at them while crying. She moved to hug Sohail, but he quickly stepped back and said, "No way... Maheera will cry all night." She spoke in English because she couldn't speak Hausa, except for a few greetings she knew from when she was married to Daddy. She kept speaking English to them, but they told her they didn't understand English; if she knew Hausa, she should speak it, and if not, she should keep her mouth shut. She kept talking in English to silence. Finally, Sohail managed to speak a bit of English, saying they didn't understand English and asking who she was since they were told she was their mother. She said yes, she is. Sohail said, "Here is some money we are giving you as a gift to go back, but never say you are our mother again. We don't have a mother." She started begging them to forgive her. Sahil said, "By God, we will never forgive you; God will hold you accountable in the hereafter." She went quiet, and then started asking, "Muslim? Muslim?" meaning, "Are you Muslims?"
Sahil said, "Five daily prayers, plus Nafeela (voluntary prayers). Soon we are going to Mecca, and anyone feeling jealous can just watch and deal with it." Thinking she could trick them, the white woman said she also loved Islam. Sohail said, "No, don't come into it; by God, if she enters it now she's wasting her time, she's going straight to Paradise? She spent her whole life finishing the world in clubs until she grew old, and now she wants to enter and just walk into Paradise? It won't work." Sahil added, "Even Jesus is a prophet, we Muslims love Jesus too, just live your lives." They spoke in Hausa which she didn't really understand, but she got into the car with them and they headed home.
As they arrived home, they saw three thugs running out of their house, jumping onto a motorcycle and speeding off as if they were about to fly. Sohail parked at the gate, leaving Halley in the car, and they rushed into the house. They found Islaha dragging her feet in the parlor, completely unable to stand, crying heavily. Sahil rushed to her, asking, "What's wrong?" She said, "I can't stand, by God, they hurt me." Sahil shook her, asking, "What did they do to you? Who are those people? I don't even know them!" Her eyes clouded over, and she fell down flat and fainted.
Sohail went into his own part of the house and found Maheera sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of what was happening. Sahil ran out just as Halley entered inside with her suitcase. Sohail said, "Take her up, let's take her to the hospital." Sahil picked Islaha up and they headed to the hospital.
Halley even got into the car and followed them, while Maheera was completely forgotten, still sleeping. As they drove away, the men returned to the house and entered Sohail's part. Maheera woke up startled to find the three thugs standing over her, getting ready to rape her. Maheera grabbed a phone lying nearby and threw it at the one trying to pull off his pants. She went wild, struggling fiercely with them. One of the men gave her over five heavy slaps until her face swelled up.
Sahil and the others were already a bit far in the car when Sahil said, "Drop me off, Sohail, let me go back home, Maheera is there." Sohail hit the brakes, turned the car around, dropped Sahil off, and drove the rest to the hospital. When Sahil ran inside, he found that they had already started tearing Maheera's clothes off while she screamed.
He delivered a single blow to the would-be rapist, who crashed to the floor unconscious. The others dragged their unconscious friend, trying to run. Sahil went after them and beat them mercilessly as if committing murder until they stopped moving. Maheera fixed her clothes while crying. He called the police, who came and took the men away. Then he stayed at the house with Maheera, waiting for Sohail to return and pick them up. Soon after, Sohail returned, picked them up, and they all went to the hospital.
The arrested thugs were released that very night simply by making a phone call, not even spending a single night at the police station because they had strong backing. Sahil and the others left without knowing they had already been released. Sahil couldn't even speak due to intense worry over the situation, terrified that they might have raped his wife just as they had attempted with Maheera.
They returned to the hospital where Islaha was being attended to and cared for. She didn't regain consciousness at all until daybreak. The twins were at the hospital together with Maheera, sitting around Islaha. Maheera said, "You guys should go to the mosque and pray." Sahil asked, "Can I even pray in this state?" Maheera replied, "You are going to pray for her." Sohail said, "Let's go." They went out to the mosque. Sahil performed his prayers completely out of it. Maheera prayed inside while seated, and they returned to the hospital. Around 9 AM, Sohail went to buy takeaway food, but neither of them could eat a thing, not even the one who bought it.
Around 11 AM, Islaha regained consciousness, slowly opening her eyes to look at Maheera and the others. They rushed to the bedside, asking how she felt. Sahil asked, "What did they do to you?" Maheera looked at them with eyes welling up with tears and said, "They gave me an injection in the soles of both my feet; I can't walk now." Sahil said, "Innalillahi wa Innailayhir raji'un, but compared to being raped, this is better." Crying, she said, "We don't even know what kind of injection it was; maybe it was poison, I'm going to die!" and she raised her voice in tears.
Tears of sympathy rolled down Maheera's cheeks as she said, "You won't die, God willing, that's not what they gave you." The chief doctor walked in, and when they explained the situation, he said, "Wait, there are tests to be done to find out what kind of injection it was." Immediately, he had Islaha taken to a separate section where they ran emergency tests. After reviewing the results, the doctor called Sohail and the others and said, "To be honest, the injection they gave her means she will never be able to use her feet again in her life. Her feet will no longer function or move—that is the injection they gave her. There is nowhere you can go to cure this condition, even if you travel abroad."
Sahil said, "You are not God, she will walk one day, God willing. I refuse to believe your words; God is here and He will heal this condition." The doctor said, "We hope so for you, but right now her body is completely fine and healthy; everything in her body works except her feet, so you should just buy her a wheelchair and continue medical follow-ups to see what God will do."
Sahil and the others walked out downhearted. They only told Maheera. That day, they moved Islaha to a much more expensive hospital. The next day, they did their own thorough investigations, but the conclusion was the same as what the previous doctor said. Maheera took care of everything for Islaha while Sahil supported her, even though thank God she could use all parts of her body except her feet. They visited up to seven hospitals, and every single one of them said the exact same thing.
When Islaha finally pushed to know the truth, they told her what was going on. She cried, and it was with great difficulty that she was consoled. Sahil said, "Honestly, instead of them raping you, this is much better." Islaha replied, "Rape would have been better—once it's over, it's over. But with this, I will never walk again; I've become a cripple while fully conscious!" Sahil looked at her and said, "Who told you that? You will walk, God willing." Aunty Aisha and Alhaji Saminu kept making trips back and forth. Daddy was informed, but he didn't even visit, only calling on the phone. Adnan and the others returned from their trip and heard the news, but didn't even show up to check on her. Once they finished their medical rounds, they brought Islaha home in a wheelchair. Sohail said, "God willing, in the future she will even be taken abroad to be seen." Maheera adjusted the wheelchair, Sahil placed Islaha on it, and they went inside the house.
Islaha sank into deep depression, feeling her situation was beyond her and beyond him. Tears trickled down her face as she watched Sahil take a bath and come out, while she had to be carried and seated everywhere. He looked at her smiling and said, "Why are you always crying? It's like you don't know destiny. Thank God you can use your hands and everything else; it's just your feet. Now if I take you to the toilet you can do everything for yourself, it's much easier." He knelt right in front of her as she wiped her tears. She said, "Where is the bride now? If you get tired of me like this, you'll marry another woman. Is that what you're thinking? Me, whom you married when I wasn't even healthy? You saw us like this and managed to marry us without feeling any hesitation, saying you accepted and saw everything. But now that a disability has happened—and it's not something you brought upon yourself—you expect me to turn my back on you? Please stop saying that."
Sohail and the others had completely forgotten about the white woman, Baturiya (Halley). Since she followed them to the hospital, no one knew where she went or even remembered her. Sahil said, "She is smart; wherever she went, she'll surface, she's not a child."
Maheera said, "May God set things right for you then." Sahil said, "Amen. Off you go now, you see I have a bride here." Islaha burst into tears, saying, "Stop calling me a bride! Is this how a bride is treated, being crippled?" Maheera walked out laughing.
Sahil picked her up and said, "Today I'm starting my job." She protested, "You are not going to touch me, I can do it myself!" He gave her a playful glare, removed her towel, and quickly turned around, burying his head on the bed, saying, "I can't look! I brought this on myself, I thought I was a bad boy, but it turns out I'm not like that." Islaha laughed and said, "Is this how men are? If so, women would never get married! Hand me my prayer dress so I can cover my body." With his eyes tightly shut, he handed it to her. She put it on, and then he opened his eyes, saying, "Today I've seen something beyond me!" He pulled the food closer, served them both, picked her up, placed her on the bed, and sat beside her so they could eat together.
When Maheera went back, she asked Sohail, "Where is Mummy?" He replied, "What? Do I know where she went? Give me my food; she knows where she went. Who told her to stay near us? By God, if she gets kidnapped, I won't pay a single dime!" Maheera served him food and they ate. After they prepared for sleep, he said, "The day after tomorrow I'm traveling to Dubai." Maheera shed a tear. He smiled, turned off the light, laid her down on the bed, lay beside her, and asked, "What do you want?" She said, "I just don't like these travels." He replied, "Is that all? Traveling is necessary, Maheera. How many times must I explain for you to understand, but you refuse to? Come on, Sweet." She said, "I'm telling you I want children, you refuse to do anything about it, how do you expect me to act?" Sohail said, "What are those kids going to give you? Bad kids are born just to stress people out."
She went silent, turning things over in her mind. Sohail said, "What can I do?" Acting slightly scared, he gently hugged Maheera, and she tightly clutched him happily. He started giving her playful side-eyes—well, he was being forced anyway. He gently pulled down her nightgown and said, "A man is traveling, so he has to pay a bribe..." Their lips locked together, and he said, "I saw this being done in films, I know it's what you want." Maheera didn't even speak as he pressed close, sucking on her lips. Maheera pressed closer, and Sohail said, "So this isn't for nothing! You're smarter than me, truly." Maheera smiled as they continued kissing each other. Sohail couldn't stop; he became frantic and wild. He didn't even realize when he pulled down her nightgown completely, exposing Maheera's chest. Sohail turned on the light and said, "Let's do this in the light, sincerely." Maheera's expression changed completely like a witch's, and he said, "Look at the boss of bad girls, you've even turned into this like you're used to it. I really need medicine!" Maheera felt shy and turned off the light. He turned it back on and said, "It's better I see what you're doing, eye to eye. You act all shy and innocent like you don't do these things." Maheera crawled under the blanket, laughing. He crawled under the blanket too, and Maheera hugged him from behind with nothing on. He sighed and said, "A husband will really feel like he's hugging a clay pot." He turned around, started stroking her hair gently, and kissing her. Maheera felt immense joy—he actually knew how to do it, she thought to herself. He moved down to her neck, kissing it all the way. Maheera clung to him, stroking his chest and removing his shirt. As he moved down to her breasts, he began massaging them with both hands, saying, "So these things are for play! I used to play video games on TV all day without knowing; I was just clicking handles when there were actual handles to press!" They laughed.
Maheera's main goal was for him to get the hang of it and learn, but he didn't even go far before he stopped, turned around to lie on his back, and said, "If I'm just going to stay here doing this one thing, I can't. If you don't love me, tell me."
Maheera laughed, turned over, and hugged him back while naked. He turned back around and asked, "Should we continue?" She said, "Of course!" He couldn't restrain himself either, even though he pretended otherwise. He continued touching Maheera, and she placed her mouth on top of her own breasts. He said, "At my age, I am in trouble today! I'm going to turn into one of the guys from Islaha's Baffa's house. Let me save you from this habit." Maheera was just fulfilling her purpose, completely unbothered, insisting he figure it out. When she tried to pull down his pants, he grabbed them and said, "Only when I return from my trip! Leave me alone." Maheera took off her panties and said, "We tried and tried for you to get the hint when things were peaceful, but you refused." They started wrestling as Sohail tried to keep his pants on. He quickly jumped off the bed. Maheera said, "Come back, I told you!" He replied, "I won't come back, you're turning me into a bad boy just from experimenting."
Maheera laughed, put her clothes back on, and said, "At least you did something you've never done before." He said, "Well, I haven't forgiven you!" She asked, "Me?" He said, "No, I've forgiven you. Now come let's sleep, I've stopped, look I've put my clothes back on, we're going to sleep." He came back, put his shirt back on, and lay down. She didn't do anything else to him, and they fell asleep like that.
As for Islaha, after they finished getting ready for bed, Sahil laid her down. Sahil was more in the mood; he started stroking her. She looked at him and said, "I'm sick, please have mercy, let me heal." Sahil said, "It's just your feet, what do I care about feet? At most I'm just looking, I'm not going to touch your feet, what are they going to do for me?" Islaha felt scared and said, "Please, by God, I don't want to," thinking he was going to do something else. He said, "Just looking, not eating, what is this? People just sit around and watch you."
Islaha, crying and sobbing, said, "I know men's tricks; you're trying to trick me, and you know I'm sick." He said, "Okay, I've stopped, but I can't leave you alone, just lie down for the pleasure of it. It's not right for people to just leave you sleeping peacefully."
A fit of laughter suddenly seized Islaha. She wiped her tears while laughing. He pulled off her nightgown, leaving her in just her panties, while she desperately tried to cover her chest with her hands. Sahil pulled a wide-eyed expression, then started laughing as he remembered the story of Lalai. He said, "Lalai herself would hate herself, acting like a confused village girl." Islaha laughed. She turned away, but he held her, just standing and watching. When he got tired of that, he started trying to pull off her panties. She refused. With force, he pulled off her panties, looked at her private area, and said, "Whoa... let me go take a break!" He stood up, walked to the kitchen, fetched a gulp of cold water, drank it down, and said, "They are the ones who have something to look at!" He grabbed some biscuits, ate them, and came back saying, "I went on a break and now I'm back." Islaha said, "By God, I'm feeling sleepy, you're just making me laugh like we're in school taking a break." She put her clothes back on, and he turned off the light, lay down, resting his head on her chest while breathing in her scent until sleep overtook them both.
Early the next morning, Maheera woke up, prepared a delicious breakfast, and took it to Islaha's section before going back to take a bath. She dressed up in casual clothes and went to wake Sohail up from sleep. He slowly opened his eyes, saw how gorgeous she looked, pulled her into his arms, and hugged her. She asked, "What about food?" He was already used to taking morning baths, which was why he didn't do much now; he just got up, rinsed his mouth, and they came out to their dining area.
As for Islaha, Sahil helped her take a bath and get dressed. If you saw her, you would swear her feet were working. He picked her up, brought her out to the parlor, and fed her with his own hands as they ate together.
Halley came to the house from the hotel where she was staying, dressed in palazzo trousers and a thin-sleeved top. She walked straight into Sahil's part and found them in the parlor. Sahil raised his head, looked at her, and said, "My goodness, are you still in this world?" She stayed quiet because she couldn't understand what he was saying. Islaha said, "Hey Mum, how are you?" Halley said, "No... no... not 'how are you'... 'How you'." Islaha said, "Is that how it's written, baby?" Sahil said, "It's written 'How are you'." Halley said, "But the way it's spoken isn't like that, 'How you'." Islaha said, "How you?" Without any warmth, Halley sat down and crossed her legs. Sahil said, "Don't you dare speak English in this house again, I ban English," he told Islaha. Halley spoke in English, Sahil spoke in Hausa. She asked, "You Muslim?" Sahil started reciting the Quran so she could witness it firsthand. Halley stood up. She herself didn't even know who Sahil was and who Sohail was until she asked Islaha, who told her.
Seeing that Islaha couldn't walk, Halley even shed tears, realizing her son had married a cripple. She stood up and walked over to where Sohail was. Sohail, sitting down eating his food, looked at her and said, "Oh, you're still alive? We thought you'd been kidnapped." Maheera bumped his arm and greeted her. Halley sat down, fixing her hair. Sohail said, "Someone should bring her tuwo (swallow), it's pure poison." Maheera said, "Even you didn't eat leftover tuwo, let alone someone coming from abroad." Sohail said, "Okay, since you said so, don't do what you planned." Maheera stood up to make her coffee, but Halley quickly turned up her nose, saying not to bother, she'd drink her own at the hotel. Sohail said, "She can lead us back, anyway I didn't agree wholeheartedly in the first place."
Halley grew tired of pressing her phone when no one was paying attention to her since the twins had banned English. When Maheera tried to speak, Sohail said, "I have banned English in this house, even if it's golden, I don't approve of it. And if you try to poke your nose into it, by God, we will fight, I'm telling you. Mind your business, she is our mother, leave her alone, when she gets tired she will leave."
Halley then called Daddy and asked where she could find a translator, a woman who could translate what the twins were saying to her. Daddy called someone in Abuja who connected Halley with a young Hausa woman named Sumayya who spoke English and agreed to be paid a salary.
By evening, the translator arrived at the house. They were all in the main parlor: Sahil, Sohail, Maheera, and Islaha, watching TV. Halley walked in wearing short shorts, her legs looking like thin sticks inside them. Sohail laughed, looking at Halley's thick thighs and legs. Sahil nudged Sohail and said, "When she was giving birth to us, she must have really suffered, I know it." Islaha and the others suppressed their laughter. Halley asked the translator, whose name was Sumayya, "What did they say?" Sumayya knew that if she translated what they actually said, there would be trouble. Sohail said, "Translate accurately, what's she going to do?" Sumayya translated for Halley. Halley glared at them and said she is their mother, she gave birth to them. The translator said, "She says she is your mother, she is the one who gave birth to you." Sohail said, "Uhm, as if we didn't already know that, otherwise we would have suffered a heart attack right along with her." Sumayya translated it to Halley. White people don't struggle to cry—tears immediately welled up in Halley's eyes. Sahil said, "Why are you crying just from someone telling you the truth? We are the ones who want to cry because God is angry with us, but we don't even have the opportunity." Sumayya kept translating everything. Halley wiped her tears with a tissue and said, "My heartbreak is that you guys became Muslims." Sohail laughed and said, "Well, you'll die of frustration then, because we will die as Muslims! In fact, we are about to get up and perform the Zuhr prayer—and Asr is approaching," added Sahil. Sumayya translated it to the white woman. Halley looked at them with a furious expression, and Sahil shouted "Allahu Akbar!" just to make her even angrier.
She stood up, grabbed her suitcase, and left the house in the car she had bought.
In this section of the Hausa novel Mummunar Dabi'a, Sahil and Islaha return home after their wedding events, only to find that Sahil's estranged mother, Halley (a foreign woman nicknamed a "bony creature with a long neck" by Daddy), has arrived from abroad. Meanwhile, tragedy strikes when brutal thugs break into the house and violently attack Islaha, injecting her with an irreversible paralyzing substance in her feet that leaves her permanently crippled. Simultaneously, the thugs attempt to assault Maheera in Sohail's section of the house, but Sahil and Sohail intervene, subduing the attackers before the police fail to hold them due to their powerful connections.
Despite the heartbreaking reality of Islaha's permanent disability, Sahil remains deeply devoted to her, comforting her through her severe depression. Tensions rise further when Halley moves into the family home with a hired translator, constantly clashing with the twins, who adamantly ban the English language in their household and reject her maternal claims due to her past neglect. Ultimately, after enduring continuous mockery, religious defiance, and emotional rejection from her sons, Halley packs her bags and storms out of the house in frustration.
