The story alternates between two main locations and storylines in Northern Nigeria: Kaduna and Adamawa State.
1. Kaduna: Fadeelah's Struggle
- The Conflict at Home: Fadeelah is a disciplined, hard-working young woman who works at Rahama TV. She lives in a cramped, stressful home with her strict father, her mother, and her younger sister, Husna. Her father is constantly irritated by neighborhood gossip regarding Fadeelah's job in the media, believing it brings disrespect to the family.
- Forced Resignation: Despite Fadeelah's pleas and her desire to contribute financially, her father forces her to quit her job and gives her an ultimatum to either present a suitor of her choice or accept one chosen by him within three months.
Unwanted Betrothal: Even though Fadeelah confides in her colleague Jamilu (who mentions that their boss, MD, is deeply in love with her), her father ignores her preferences. He arranges her marriage to Kabiru (the son of a local fish seller, Sale). Despite her protests, her father accepts the bride price (kudin aure) and sets the wedding date for three months away.
2. Adamawa State: The Tragic Wedding
- The Grand Celebration: Meanwhile, in Adamawa State, a massive and lavish wedding is taking place for Muhammad Sagir—the only son of the wealthy Alhaji Sagir Mai Shadda (famous for his generosity, such as giving out free fuel to celebrate his son's wedding).
- The Bride: Muhammad has married Hafsat, who is described as a close relative/foster sister to him.
- The Horror Unfolds: After the wedding celebrations conclude, Alhaji Sagir and his wife, Hajiya Baturiya, insist on accompanying the newlyweds to their new home on Nasarawa Road rather than letting them go alone with friends. Upon arrival, Muhammad goes inside to check on the bride. When he takes too long, Alhaji Sagir sends him a call, which goes unanswered.
The Discovery: Hajiya Baturiya goes inside to check and lets out a terrifying scream. Alhaji Sagir rushes in and discovers a horrific scene: Hafsat has had her throat slit, lying dead in a pool of blood ("yankar rago"). Shocked and devastated, Hajiya Baturiya faints, and a panicked Alhaji Sagir immediately calls for the police.
