Story DescriptionMai Ɗaki is a Hausa family drama that explores marriage, love, sacrifice, forgiveness, education, and the difficult relationships that can exist within a polygamous household.
The story follows Hauwa'u, a young woman whose first marriage to Ishak ends because of abuse, neglect, and humiliation. Later she marries Ahmad, a wealthy and caring man who treats her with kindness and respect. Although Ahmad loves her deeply, Hauwa'u must learn to live peacefully with his children and his strong-willed mother.
After unexpected events lead to the collapse of her second marriage, Hauwa'u returns to her parents' home and struggles to rebuild her life. She decides to continue her education despite many obstacles. While trying to move forward, Ishak returns seeking forgiveness and asks her to remarry him. At the same time, memories of Ahmad and the happiness they once shared continue to fill her heart.
The novel follows Hauwa'u's emotional journey as she chooses between her past, her future, and her dreams.
SummaryThe novel begins with Hauwa'u happily settling into her marriage with Ahmad. He treats her with affection, values her cooking, respects her parents, and asks only that she maintain peace with his elderly mother and children from previous marriages.
As Hauwa'u adjusts to married life, she wins Ahmad's admiration through her kindness, patience, and dedication. However, family conflicts gradually arise, especially involving his children and household tensions. A serious incident involving her younger brother increases emotional strain within the family.
Eventually the marriage comes to an end, forcing Hauwa'u to observe her waiting period (iddah) before returning to her parents' home. Rather than giving up, she decides to continue her education and works hard to complete her secondary school qualifications.
During this period, her former husband Ishak repeatedly visits, regrets his past mistakes, and begs her to return to him. Hauwa'u firmly refuses, explaining that she has finally experienced dignity, love, and respect in marriage and cannot return to the abusive life she once endured.
