Original Story Summary

After a difficult pregnancy, Hauwa'u gives birth prematurely to a baby boy named Abdullahi (Abulkhairi). Although her husband Ishak takes her to the hospital and shows affection toward the baby, he remains emotionally distant and controlling toward her.

Ishak's elder sister comes to help Hauwa'u during her postpartum period. She treats Hauwa'u with kindness and care, making the house peaceful and joyful. During their conversations, Hauwa'u discovers a shocking truth: Ishak had been married before—more than once—and has children, including a daughter named Rukayya. Ishak never told her about his past.

This revelation deeply hurts Hauwa'u. She begins questioning her marriage and realizes that her husband deliberately hides important parts of his life.

Ishak also forbids Hauwa'u from interacting with neighbors and even limits contact with her own family. When she visits neighbors after her forty-day postpartum period, he becomes furious and slaps her so hard that she is injured.

His sister strongly condemns his abusive behavior and leaves the house in anger despite Hauwa'u's pleas for her to stay.

Afterward, Hauwa'u struggles with loneliness but begins thinking about returning to school and becoming financially independent. She secretly gives her mother money to start a small business.

Although Ishak becomes a caring father to baby Abulkhairi, he continues to control Hauwa'u's movements and relationships. The novel ends this section with tension between the couple as Ishak prepares to finally explain his hidden past.
