Aliyu watched her with a look of profound pity before pulling out his phone to call Mummy. As if waiting for the call, she answered on the first ring.
"Aliyu, where is Zayd? Are you guys together?"
"Um, Mummy, Zayd has been in an accident. Right now we are at the hospital, and they’ve rushed him into the emergency room."
"Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un! I am on my way right now, insha Allah."
"Mum—" before he could finish, she hung up. He sat back down, continuing to pray for Zayd’s recovery.
Before long, Mom arrived, stepping out of the car even before the driver could park properly. She was a woman of around 47, fair-complexioned, slightly full-figured, and of medium height—resembling Aliyu. She was dressed in a blue Swiss Lace outfit patterned with sky-blue flowers, with a large sky-blue veil draped over her shoulders. She walked straight to the emergency room, finding Aliyu and the others waiting in distress.
Khansa'u ran up to her, weeping silently. Mummy gently patted her back in comfort until they sat down together. Aliyu greeted her before she asked if the doctor had come out yet. He simply nodded, unable to speak.

The doctor simply shook his head and gestured for Aliyu to follow him to his office. Everyone stood up to follow, but the doctor waved them back, leaving only Aliyu to accompany him.
After taking a cool sip of water, the doctor looked directly at Aliyu.
"Please bear with what I'm about to tell you..." Before he could finish, Aliyu blurted out, "Are you going to say he's dead?"
The doctor offered a faint, side-mouthed smile. "No, he is still breathing. We managed to stop the bleeding that was heading toward his brain, and we expect him to wake up within four hours. Although we can’t guarantee he will regain consciousness, we are hopeful."
Tears streamed down Aliyu's face as he thought of the devastating blow this news would deal to Daddy.
The doctor walked around his desk, patted Aliyu's shoulder gently, and said, "I'm so sorry, please take heart. Just keep praying for him, and may Almighty Allah lift his burdens and grant him lasting health."
"Ameen," Aliyu responded, thanked the doctor, and walked out.
He walked slowly, unaware of where his feet were taking him, until he reached the corridor leading to the emergency section. The moment Khansa'u spotted him, she rushed over. "Lee, what did the doctor say? Where is Zayd? Did they say we can go in and see him?" She fired off the questions all at once.
He simply took her hand and led her over to where Mummy was sitting, then relayed what the doctor had said—though he kept to himself the part about not being certain of Zayd waking up.
The four hours passed with no one moving from the spot except Aliyu, who went to pray. By then, Hajia Mariya (Khansa'u's mother), her two younger sisters Haseena and Ayeesh, along with Zayyad (Zayd's friend), Mahfouz (Aliyu's friend), and Zayd's younger sister Ma'eesha, had all arrived at the hospital.
Right around that time, a doctor came out asking for the patient's mother. Mummy stepped forward, and the doctor motioned for her to follow.

"Why didn't you have them call me, Zayd? I actually had to push past the doctor to get in here."

"He hasn't returned yet, Zayd, but he called and said he will arrive later, insha Allah."

The burial rites and shrouding were completed, but the funeral prayers and burial were postponed until morning due to the approaching darkness.
A phone call Mummy received with condolences threw her into total confusion. Stunned, she hurried straight to Daddy's room to find out what was going on.
